Chen, an assistant professor of computer science, traveled to South Korea to receive the award and deliver a talk at the 2022 Samsung AI Forum. She is one of five recipients of the award, which recognizes promising researchers under 35 who have made a significant impact in advancing the discipline. Each recipient receives $30,000.

Chen’s talk at the Forum focused on how to make natural language processing more efficient. Her work centers on understanding how human knowledge can be obtained from text, and how to develop effective methods for using that knowledge and language in intelligent systems. She co-leads the Princeton NLP group and is part of the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning group.

Prior to joining the Princeton faculty in 2019, Chen worked as a visiting scientist at Facebook AI Research in Seattle. She received her Ph.D. from Stanford University and B.E. from Tsinghua University, both in computer science. Her recent work has been recognized with a Sloan Foundation Fellowship, an Outstanding Paper Award from the Association for Computational Linguistics, a Google Research Scholar Award and multiple research awards from industry.

Also among this year’s award recipients is a Ph.D. alumni of the computer science department at Princeton, Tengyu Ma. Ma studied under Sanjeev Arora while at Princeton and is now an assistant professor of computer science and statistics at Stanford University.
