English Language Requirements

Department graduate programs include an English language proficiency requirement. This policy applies to all non-native English speakers who did not complete their undergraduate studies in the United States.

Applicants who fit this description must submit scores from either TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic. TOEFL iBT at Home or IELTS Online are both accepted. The department does not accept TWE test scores or Duolingo.

For master’s degree applicants: You must score a minimum of 28 on the speaking section of the TOEFL, or an 8 in the IELTS, in order to be admitted to the program.

For doctoral applicants: there is no minimum score for admission. However, If you score less than 27 on the speaking section of the TOEFL or 8 on the IELTS, you must pass Princeton's Oral Proficiency Test at the beginning of your first year.

Students who do not pass the test must take additional English classes and may retake the test. Students who do not pass by the end of their first year of study will not be allowed to continue in the program.
