In 2001 archaeologists in Peru found 20 conch shell trumpets in an ancient ceremonial center. Researchers used software to characterize the acoustic properties of each shell, reconstruct the shell's interior, and study how the shape of the stone ceremonial chamber where they were found would alter the sound. http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/11/conch-trumpets-peru/
